Archived: 2017 Supervisor of the Year Award Recipient, Jon Roberts

Tom Bechman from Indiana Prairie Farmer presented the Supervisor of the Year Award to the winner at the Annual Conference Luncheon on January 9, 2018.

This year’s recipient of the 2017 Supervisor of the Year award goes to someone who has been described by many as the “consummate gentleman with a servant’s heart; friendly, loyal and considerate. He helps quietly behind the scenes in many ways and gives generously of his time. He is also a great public advocate for soil and water conservation. His son states that Community Involvement is very important to him. This Supervisor has been involved for years in the District, the Association, Kiwanis and several other worthy organizations.

Family and faith are priorities to him and he is gifted at bringing out the best in those he serves alongside. We are honored this year to be able to give this 2017 Supervisor of the Year Award to Jon Roberts of Kosciusko County.

Jon was an early adopter of 100% No-Till in the 1980s. He helped promote T by 2000 and was very involved in the Conservation Progress Shows, even hosting one.

He has served as a District Supervisor for 25 years and also served on the board of the Indiana Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Darci Zolman, Program Administrator at Kosciusko County SWCD, states, “I have tremendous respect for Jon. He gives of himself, not just to the SWCD, but Kiwanis, local blood drives, 4-H, Cooperative Extension, the Community Foundation and more. We have served on local and state committees together and I have been impressed with his knowledge, interpretation of information and ability to articulate his thoughts with great diplomacy. . . . Jon is certainly the model for being an effective supervisor!”

A few fun facts about Jon:
He was in one of the first People to People groups from Indiana that went to Russia. He was briefly detained by police in Panama for riding in a car promoting political messages. And, third fun fact . . . Jon has been a member of the Lakeland Kiwanis Club of North Webster for 46 years.  He has served in all areas of leadership in the club; where he is currently Secretary.  The club meets every week and Jon has 46 years of perfect attendance.

Jon has been married for 36 years and has two sons, Marc, married to Chelsea; and Matt, married to Mariah. He is very proud and enjoys spending time with his five grandchildren.
